Appearance

Hiro, like most Midchildan residents, keeps a very standard humanoid appearance. He has short, wavy blonde hair that reaches behind his ears with bright green eyes. His body is physically and athletically trained, though to runner's specifications. He is built for speed rather than overwhelming power, but rather than "advertise" his fit body, he covers it up with oversized clothes -- coats, shirts that are two sizes too large, sagging pants -- and plays down his physical agility. He favors dark sunglasses and a flat-brimmed baseball style cap with a Tokyo University logo on the front of it.

Personality

The teenage years have not been kind to Hiro. After spending time at the inn, leaving, returning, and leaving again, fortune-seeking has taken its toll on a determined and previously driven young man. He has become worn down, crestfallen, and a loner. The transformation from pure altruism to pure self-centeredness and the attempts at "making it" have only resulted in a disappointed kid.

Background

Hiro and Matsumi

Orphaned at birth, Hiro was taken in as a ward of the Time-Space Administration Bureau, where he was cared for in one of the national orphanages and raised and educated to be a proud citizen of Midchilda. Having never known who his parents were, he simply accepted that he was one of the other unfortunates who had lost their parents in the dangerous and cataclysmic attacks of the terrorist known as Jail Scaglietti. Throughout his education and childhood, Hiro loved to get into things and just ... take them apart just to find out how they could be put back together better than they were originally constructed. Door locking mechanisms, tables, basic electronics, showerheads, bathroom sinks, toilets... anything he could get his hands on just to figure out how they worked. This often got him in trouble, but any deterrent they attempted to use on him simply failed as his curiousity would always get the best of him.

After finishing primary schooling with these same tendencies, Hiro was drawn into the Time-Space Administration Bureau's Engineering Academy as a result of his mechanical capability ... and curiousity. It was here that he specialized in the development of Intelligent Devices as well as other mechanical and magical tools and technology. He is fully capable of understanding most magic systems under the administration of the Time-Space Administration Bureau -- despite not being very practiced or experienced past simple uses of Modern Midchilda magic.

With his education, he has traveled to many of the T.S.A.B.'s Administrated worlds in order to gain experience with different technology and magic levels and "intern" himself so to speak. It was during this time that he met and requested assignments with another individual performing similar activities in one of the T.S.A.B.'s contracted operating groups on a non-Administrated planet, a girl named Sie Kaoru. By selecting missions to contract with her over a number of years, he grew extremely close to her until the time that Kaoru was required to begin operating solo. Seperated from her, Hiro continued on to flourish in the field of engineering and overall SCIENCE!

After graduating from the Academy fully and receiving a commission with the T.S.A.B. Navy, Hiro has been promoted to a Special Investigations position and is assigned heavily to studying foreign technology and magical anomalies, though he constantly refers to himself jokingly as a "thaumaturge".

After a tragic assignment to Non-Administrated World 098, Hiro Tanaka was officially taken off of the Time-Space Administration Bureau for conduct unbecoming an officer. Stripped of his badge and authority, Hiro was allowed to keep his Intelligent Device by propriety. Given a choice to return to Midchilda and resume life there or continue living on Non-Administrated 98, Hiro chose to stay where he could be with Kaoru Sie and where he felt most comfortable now.

AFter drifting for a time, alone and with no money, Hiro found the inn and many of his old friends from before, including Matsumi Shinomori and Axle Crank amongst others. After a time settling in the inn, Hiro obtained a job working as a DJ in the area at Club Cyberia in order to support himself and others around him. In order to get along with many of the residents, Hiro avoided conflict for a time and gave and helped thoughtlessly to whoever seemed to need it. At the same time, he continued to "chase" Matsumi romantically, to be met with little success.

After an oni-driven competition invitation was issued to the entire inn (amongst other unusual occurrences), Hiro attended in order to cheer for his friends, namely Axle. However, it ended up in the end that the "prizes" for the winners of the tournament competition were three of the inn's tenants dressed in lingerie, bound to their selecting winner by magical rings. After having such a prize rejected by the winners, the Oni said they would dispose of the three "unwanted prizes" -- Izumi Saotome, Sachiko Uchiha, and Shinshi Seta -- which upset the attending inn-members. Hiro gladly accepted Sachiko's ring in lieu of a winner in order to keep her from harm, while Axle accepted Izumi's and Hitomi Uzumaki accepted Shinshi's. After an awkward several days, Hiro and the others found out that the ring partners must share a kiss in order to break the rings' bondage over them, and after confronting Sachiko with this prospect, the two shared a rather long kiss to break the deal. Afterward, the rings were disposed of.

After another couple of months of working weekends and events at Cyberia, Hiro began overspending his money in order to help others, including completely funding a birthday party for Izumi to cover Matsumi's payment of pure gold, as well as giving money freely to his friends to cover expenses they came to, and other personal purchases -- clothing, namely -- in order to improve his stature. After going into debt to his employer in order to fund Christmas, Hiro began involving himself with other sources of income, namely playing middleman in shady deals from Tokyo's red light district through the relatively innocent club in the quieter part of the city. The money from this risky business began stacking up rather quickly, allowing him to buy more expensive items, including a personal computer and a desktop for the inn's tenants to use freely.

After working a full weekend both at the club and with his other 'coworkers,' Hiro came home one morning to find Shinshi creating what Hiro thought of as unnecessary noise in the living room, which had already woken up a couple of other tenants. On an already fatigue-induced short fuse, Hiro thoughtlessly hit Shinshi, which escalated quickly into a more brawl-like fight before the two were forced outside to actually "duel" each other. After only a few attacks, Hiro was easily laid low by the considerably more powerful Shinshi, which only served to embarrass him. After giving Shinshi the victory and refusing further punishment, Hiro left the grounds and wa sconfronted by another Oni who offered him money, material goods, and "the girl", all of which were extremely appealing to Hiro, as well as the ability to get Shinshi back. After striking a deal with the Oni to use a provided key to open a vampire-dominated castle, Hiro listened to words of wisdom from the Oni, who told him that he was too soft and would need to toughten up or be "king of the sadsacks forever," which all rang too true to him after reflecting on the past's failures.

Special Abilities

Midchildan Magic - Like all investigators and mages in the T.S.A.B., Hiro is educated in the use of magic, which incorporates the use of Magic Circles that form around the user depending on the type of spell that is used. The magic can vary as widely as the user, as every Intelligent Device that acts as that user's Spellbook can store spells at the user's whim.

  • Shooting Magic - Offensive Magic that is focused through the S.G.'s cartridge system. These are unlike normal unguided shots in that they are given actual magical focus by the user.
    • Barret Shot - A high-powered magical round greatly enhanced by the user's magical ability. It is faster and hits harder than a normal shot due to its layers and layers of magical energy.
    • Barret Shot RF - A variation of the basic Barret Shot, this technique creates an explosive, homing magic bullet that locks at the target's heat signature. Its greatest advantage is its ability to automatically pursue the target leaving the caster free to perform another action.
  • Defense Magic - protective magic that is able to ward off harm from whatever is intended to be saved from danger, whether it be the caster or others around them.
    • Protection - A long-duration defensive spell, this technique erects a bubble barrier around a single target that can withstand a great deal of damage. it is typically used to defend a noncombatant during a heavy combat situation.
    • Defenser - a long duration spell similar to "Protection," this spell is a larger-area spell that is weaker against direct assault, but is able to keep out unwanted substances -- such as water or gas -- while maintaining survivability inside. This spell is able to protect a greater area than "Protection".
    • Round Shield - this spell focuses as a very basic defensive spell able to defend against physical and magical forces, including gunshots, magic, swords, staves, etc. Its strength is based heavily on the user's magic skill; thus, Hiro's is not impressively strong and will fall if hit hard enough.
  • Support Magic - magic that is designed to assist a user in out-of-combat situations, or to enhance their or others' ability to operate.
    • Area Search - a spell that sends out one or two small projectiles that search out a designated target as recognized by the user and the Intelligent Device's artificial intelligence.
    • Physical Heal - a spell that focuses the user's spiritual energy into another target to slowly regenerate wounds and to raise stamina. This is not meant to be used as any manner of 'instant heal' but is able to relieve damage from sprains, bruises, lacerations, or other light-to-moderate wounds over a short amount of time.

Powers and Merits

Powers

Linker Core Attunement - While all beings with a soul possess a Linker Core, Hiro -- like most people from Midchilda -- possesses a higher level of attunement to his Linker Core. To explain, a Linker Core is a spiritual manifestation and attachment to the soul that allows a person to connect their mind to their spiritual energy and allows them to cast magic -- period, not just Midchildan Magic. A person with a higher attunement to their Linker Cores can cast magic of varying types and levels, and can fine-tune their use of specific abilities natural to refined possessors.

  • Telepathy - Hiro has LINE-OF-SIGHT, DIRECTED telepathy that can only be used with natural telepathic users or people with a higher attunement to their Linker Cores.
  • Magic Use - Hiro's Linker Core allows him to cast low-level magic spells, which he uses most of from the Midchildan school of magic.
  • Damage - If Hiro's Linker Core is damaged or removed, his magical abilities will suffer proportionally. A removed or destroyed Linker Core could have devastating secondary effects as well.

Merits

5 / 5 Natural, + 3 / 3 from Flaws

  • Good Old Boy (2): You're just a nice person, and people recognize and appreciate that. +1 die on social rolls when interacting with your fellow folk.
  • Common Sense (1): You are full of practical wisdom. A great merit for starting characters, as you may receive advice from the Storyteller regarding how to handle certain situations.
  • Ambidextrous (2): You are equally dextrous, or nearly so, with both hands, and use your "off" hand at no penalty. Difficulties to do two different tasks at once (one with each hand) are at +1 for both rolls, rather than +1 for the "right" hand and +3 for the other. Not useful if your GM isn't the nitpicky sort who doesn't give a shit about off-hand penalties and such...)
  • Concentration (1): You are very good at focusing, and modifiers regarding distracting situations can cause you to lose no more than two dice, or have no more than a +2 difficulty.
  • Ability Aptitude - ENGINEERING (1): Pick a single skill, talent, or knowledge: you're a whiz at whatver this is. -2 to difficulties relating to this ability.
  • Light Sleeper (1): You can function on very little sleep, and so are less likely to suffer penalties for losing sleep. You are also more likely to awaken quickly, and so may gain bonuses to Wits rolls when something may wake you up.

Unique Items

Symphonic Guardian - Hiro's Intelligent Device. A nanomachine colony designed to fulfill a multitude of purposes, the nanomachines are programmed to have a single hive artifical intelligence that allows it to operate as a powerful single unit, as well as allowing it to transform itself to fit a multitude of uses. This Intelligent Device takes on two standard modes, but can be upgraded in the future to allow for more. It operates as Hiro's spellbook as well as his weapon and "toolbox."

  • Device Mode - Its powered-down form resembles a set of oversized headphones and functions properly as them. While it usually functions independently as both a music storage and a playback device, it has multiple types of adaptable connection cables that allow it to be used with other storage mediums.
    • S.G.'s Device Mode has the ability to connect to other forms of technology -- electrical, electronic, mechanical, or magical in nature -- via the same connecting cables. To electronic devices, it acts as a second processor and is able to function as a primary form of input or control; for non-electronic devices, it serves as a regulator and is able to function in the form that a computer would. For instance, attaching it to a simple boombox's circuitry will allow S.G. to use that boombox as a performance medium, while attaching it to a full-blown computer will give S.G. access to that system and perform commands (including hacking if it's necessary to gain true access) at the uesr's command or at its own will.
  • Shooting Mode - S.G.'s secondary, active form resembles a pair of high-powered cartridge-powered handguns. These weapons, however, do not fire mass-driven rounds; instead, they fire contained bursts of magical energy drained from the cartridges loaded into the weapons until those cartridges are expended.
    • These can be powered up from a low sting-inducing setting to a full cartridge-draining, wall-detonating level.

Items Of Note

Lots of oonz oonz oonz music.

Weaknesses and Flaws

Curiosity (2): Your incredible curiosity often overrides your common sense. Resisting temptation requires a successful Wits roll, difficulty depending on the situation. A very bad flaw to take with certain evil sadistic Storytellers. A 3-point version in Bastet makes you obsessed with any mystery you come across, and you'll do anything to solve it.

Driving Goal (Exorbitant Wealth) (3): You have some goal which is at the basis of all your motivations, though it is of such depth or impossibility, it could probably never be achieved. Your obsession with your vision can temporarily be soothed by a proper situation (Mission, Combat, etc) or a roll (Diff 8).

Soft-hearted (1): You can't stand to witness suffering, and if you do, difficulties are at +2 for the next hour.

Weak-Willed (2): You are easily mind-controlled and manipulated. Opposed rolls are at -1 Penalty for you, and when the odds are against you, you tend to crumble.

Weak Magic - while a "mage" by name, Hiro's speciality is NOT magic. As a result, while his knowledge and comprehension is great, his actual magical performance is below par for many B-ranked Mages. His shields can only withstand minimal abuse, and his shots are not overly powerful, having about the same strength as a 9mm/.22 round.

Weakness to Silence - Hiro is susceptible to magics that suppress magical connections. A spell of this type will suppress the connection between his Linker Core and his Intelligent Device, making it impossible to cast or use the devices at all, including shooting with them.

Teenager - something everyone has to cope with at one time or another, Hiro is a typical teenage boy; he is weak to the suggestion of the opposite sex and is sometimes quick to overreaction, though this usually manifests in an unorthodox manner.
