The Makai order are an elite group of trained warriors and priests that hunt and destroy Horrors. Generally the Makai Order tries to remain secretive about it's existence to the general populous. This is to allow people to live normal lives with out fear of Horrors and other various Makai entities.

History

The Makai Order has been around for a very long long time. Quietly defending all of humanity from that shadows. Originally, It was the Makai Priest that were the front line defense against Horrors. The Makai Knights Corps was founded by the Makai Order, specifically the Makai Priests. In the past, the priests stood alone battling against the Horrors. Unfortunately, even though Makai Priests are well adept in martial arts, magic, and anti-Horror knowledge, there existed Horrors that are smarter and/or stronger than what they can handle. Facing such dangerous threats required an elite combatant group and the priests developed and formed the Makai Knights for that purpose. Numerous amounts of horrors have been defeated over the years, while some not outright destroyed but sealed away in Horror blades, Which are kept by the Watch Dogs for save keeping.

The Demon Suppression Ceremony, whenever a solar eclipse appears, the very dimensional barrier that separates the human realm and the nether realm becomes a gateway. When that happens countless Horrors would unleash themselves to humanity. The last time this event occurred unchecked, the demon family Legules was resurrected. Many Makai Knights and Priests died that day. To prevent future horrific events, the Makai order prepared for solar eclipses by performing a sacred ceremony in Kantai to put demons into submission. The Phosphorus Arrow is shot into the barrier during the solar eclipse to prevent darkness from spreading. Because of the potential danger that may occur in the ceremony, additional Makai Priests and Knights are summoned as backup forces ensure things don't go awry.

Makai Guides

Makai Guides are based on the fantastic mythical aspects of Taoist Priests, a Dōshi. The Dōshis are manipulators in magic, sensing fate, alchemy, necromancy, spiritual summoning, and healers; most of its description fits towards the Makai Priests. The main difference between a Makai Guide and Makai Priest is that the guides specialize primarily in sensing fate.

The Guides are trained in the art of sensing the outcome of events and the fates of people(s) through the use of physical mediums like tarot cards; little else is known about their capabilities. Though they can predict the outcome of certain events, giving them the ability to change and/or manipulate the outcome of fates and/or events, they are a rare group of practitioners (for unknown reasons) and many within the Makai Order presumed they have been extinct.

Makai Knights

Makai Knights (or Magical Warriors) are a group of specially trained men adept in martial and magical arts that combat Horrors. Founded by the secretive Makai Order and regulated by the Watchdogs, the knights secretly patrol their respective territories to protect civilians from Horrors. Armed with special magical equipment, the knights carry an eternal war to maintain the light over the darkness in the spiritual realm.

For equipment, each knight have their own set of Makai Armor and carry a Madougu (as an advisor and Horror detector). When facing a difficult Horror, the knight can bring out his weapon (usually a sword) and form a circle that opens a portal that instantly opens above the knight to don a wolf-motif armor for battle. Due to the dangerous properties of the armor itself, no Makai Knight can stay in their armored form for more than 99.9 seconds. If this time limit is surpassed, the armor starts to burn its wearer.

The mystical properties of soul metal limits the level of exposure a trained handler can utilize. Too much contact with soul metal, even for trained users, can be fatal, as soul metal eats away human flesh on contact and is tougher than any other alloy due to its unique properties. The knight's weapons are also made of soul metal; it has minimal side effects as the blade of the weapon is wrapped in other materials that would limit direct contact with it.

Makai Knights also possess a Madou Lighter that emits Madou Flames to help identify Horrors. They can use the same flames to encompass their armored bodies and weapons to increase damage potential, it's a technique called Blazing Armament. Makai Knights can infuse those very flames upon their Madoubas to increase their power in combat; each knight applies these methods differently relative to their equipment. The armor can be enhanced by infusions of spiritual energy, evidenced by the different forms Garo takes in various situations. When greater power is needed, they can summon their Madouba to increase their damage potential in combat, which is capable of utilizing Blazing Armament in concert with the armored knight.

As a discipline, Makai Knights must be able to control their emotions (their yin and yang) at all times. If there is an overwhelming amount of yin (darkness), the darkness can also affect personality disorder and create a self-conflicting dark persona that attempts to take over as the dominant personality. If this darkness affected them while in their armor and they surpassed the time limit, the armor's inherent demonic powers start to take over the knight, giving him tremendous power, but turning him into an uncontrollable monster known as a Lost Soul Beast (心滅獣身 Shinmetsu Jūshin) with his very soul being worn away in the process. The armor also eats the body away if the process is not stopped in time; should the knight over-come the process with his darkness, the armor itself will take a new dark twisted form and no longer be concerned of their time limit. To remedy the matter, a knight has to perform routine purification to cleanse themselves from the evils they're exposed to. However, the preventive measures aren't full-proof as a knight can succumb to darkness if they will it themselves. Should all measures fail, a Watchdog will dispatch another knight to cut down the tainted knight.

In the most difficult of missions, Makai Priests also play a supportive role as each knight has a priest(s) they seek for assistance and equipment maintenance over the span of their career. Whenever missions become challenging or require their expertise to hunt down the Horror(s), the priest(s) would assist the knight to complete their mission(s). Because there are no rules over how many priests can assist a knight, they can have as many priests to assist them in a mission.

Makai Priesthood

Makai Priests (or priestesses) are based on the fantastic mythical aspects of Taoist Priests, a Daoshi. The priests are trained to utilize a combination of mysticism, magic, elemental manipulation, martial arts, alchemy, necromancy, healing and summoning techniques to help them battle against the forces of darkness; they were the original defenders against Horrors long before the creation of the Makai Knights. However, the priests' roles had evolved into support units for the knights.

They create anti-Horror devices, spells, enchantments, and weapons to support the Makai Knights. In addition, they possess a vast knowledge of spells and purification techniques. They have seals/talisman scrolls for spells, a brush to perform seals, madougus, and have prefabricated devices used to defend or attack.

In humanity's darkest moments, it was the Makai Priests that stood as the light against the Horrors. However, despite all their abilities, they were only strong enough to destroy weak Horrors and slowed their advancements. Ultimately, they resolved the problem by creating the Makai Knights corps and their campaign became a success; since the deployment of the Makai Knights, the priests served as a more supportive role to the knights.

As back-up, the priests provided madogus, like Zaruba and Silva, to advise and detect Horrors for the knights. They also designed spiritual sensors that detect dark energies to help warn and prepare both the knights and the order of impending danger(s). When a knight have complications in defeating a Horror, it is often a priest that provides a solution to help defeat the Horror(s). Most recently, the priests have the Gouryuu in their possession. With the new addition to their arsenal, the priests now have the ability to take an offensive role against the Horrors.

Some Makai Priests will train in the use of Soul Metal. Adapting to and learning to hone the Makai Will. It is rare to see a priest wield a Soul Metal weapon over using a Madou Brush. There have been recorded cases where priests have melded with the bones of Makai Knights to gain the ability rather then spending years of training to wield Soul Metal, but such methods are painful and extremely taxing.

Makai Senate

The Makai Senate are the heads of the Makai Order. Responsible for the creation of the rules and regulations of the order itself. While not acting directly in the conflict of light and dark. The Makai Senate sends out general orders and commands the Tribune group in the effort of keeping the balance of light and dark in the endless war against the Horrors. Outside of the Tribune, Orders generally are passed down through the Watchdogs rather then given directly.

Watchdogs

They are the middle-persons behind the works of the war between Makai and Horror. It is they who usually detect Horrors and inform the Makai Knight of their missions. The Makai Knights are usually informed by a letter called "Orders Document" that's mailed to them. Watchdogs have no real control over Makai Knights, but they have been involved in directing the actions of the Makai for centuries. They help purify the Knights' weapons, refuel their Madou Fire Lighters, and send the spirits of the defeated Horrors (in the form of small daggers) back to their realm. Whenever they collect up to a dozen blades they will send the blades back into the demon realm. The story suggests there are many groups of watchdogs existing and directing the Makai's will, and one was originally human. That very human splintered her form and addressed to Garo as three cherubim-like girls who, though having the appearance of young teenagers, are technically centuries old.

Tribune

The Elite of the Elite. This group is comprised of Priests and Knights of the Makai Order that work directly for the Makai Senate rather then through a Watch Dog. Tasked with highly important missions, this group can easily be thought of as a special operations group. There missions generally take them around the world. With the important or dangerousness of these operations, Units are generally made of a Makai Knight and Priest that work together towards there goals, assigned as Partners. This is a major change in the flow of work that they normally go though as most Makai operatives work alone or with just minor support from other knights and priests.
