Matsumi's childhood was relatively rootless. Her father had become the body guard of the Jurai Royal Family, and this meant lots of travel at a very young age. Home schooled by her mother, and trained rigorously by her father, Matsumi never felt comfortable around many people, this lead her to be a shy, withdrawn child. During this time, her father had taken the young prince, Kouji Masaki Jurai, as a student, and for a few years they developed a childhood friendship. Matsumi also became acquainted with Izumi Saotome, the daughter of Misao's friend Yuffie Kisaragi.

At the age of 15, Matsumi set out on her own, eager to prove herself to the world. She reasoned the best place to do this was the place her parents held countless adventures of their own, Castle Nabiki. Upon her arrival, she found a new generation of children had been drawn to their parents former home. There, she became reunited with Izumi Saotome, and Kouji Masaki Jurai.  Matsumi, naturally aloof, cool, and emotionally guarded, began working with with the sunny, cheerful and energetic Izumi Saotome. Over time, Izumi became Matsumi's closest friend, as she found comfort in Izumi's opposite personality. Matsumi also had a mischievous streak in her, she had always enjoyed the art of theft, and often got herself into trouble getting her fingers on things she shouldn't.

During this period, Matsumi joined a mercenary group consisting of Raziel, Izumi, Sylph, and Yuriko. While Matsumi never had the direct power of her peers, she quickly found a niche using her calculating personality to provide an advantage to any situation. In short, she was able to get things done.  Matsumi, however, grew overconfident in her abilities and entered a deal with Konami Saotome that would change her forever. Matsumi made an agreement she could not keep, and Konami insisted upon the payment of her choosing-sex. Matsumi, being 15, and in over her head, refused...however, Konami considered the agreement binding, and later broke into Matsumi's room, abducted her, and attempted to extract her payment. Matsumi, already reserved and insecure about intimacy, was deeply scarred by this experience. Being only 15, she lashed out violently, towards everyone, and everything-a cold, hateful violence. Deep down, Matsumi blamed herself and spiraled into self destruction. Izumi eventually approached  Matsumi about her radical behavior, and Matsumi broke down in tears for the first time-confessing the events to her. Izumi supported Matsumi, and over time Matsumi came to terms with her herself, and what had happened. Because of this, Matsumi considers Izumi her greatest friend, and would not hesitate to come to her aid. However, she is still hesitant to extend friendship to others. (to be continued)

Matsumi spent 4 more years living at the castle, going on various adventures with Izumi and other residents. Matsumi grew concerned when a new resident, Naruhito, began treating Izumi particularly poorly, calling her stupid, and insulting her behavior. Seeing Izumi hurt, Matsumi decided to sign up herself and Izumi for the University Entrance Exams wishing to restore Izumi's confidence . After a lot of study, hard work, and a bit of luck, they were accepted into Tokyo University. During this time, events at the castle, it was decided amongst some to form an authoritarian government in which all residents were forced to be subjected under. Matsumi was told that if she were to act on her on accord, she would be banned from the castle, and no longer be welcome to live there. After speaking with Izumi, both Matsumi and Izumi decided the best course of action was to leave the castle behind, and move on, to find new adventures. Matsumi took the castle T.V, and purchased a blue scooter she named "The Blues Drive Monster". Other members of the castle followed suit, leaving for various reasons. After a bit of searching, they came across a mysterious, ran down in, with a creepy vibe. However, the price was right (free). Matsumi and Izumi decided to move in, and share a room.

The inn was mostly unfurnished and in order to make money, and try to attempt a more normal life style Matsumi, with Izumi's help, got a position as an office lady at the Tokyo Prosecutor's Office, mostly serving tea, filing, and other mundane work.

On an insignificant day, Matsumi went out exploring for a bit of adventure. She caught wind of a mysterious treasure buried deep within the earth. Her natural curiosity was piqued, and before she knew it, she had discovered what would become known as a 'Cross Gate'. After a bit of experimenting, she managed to activate the gate, and before she knew it, she found herself in a different dimension, not unlike her own. After a bit of exploring, she attempted to return, only to find that the Cross Gate no longer linked back to her home dimension, but another. After a long series of failures, she decided to make the best of her situation and use what little of the Cross Gate she understood, to her advantage.

Trapped with access to two foreign worlds, she occupied her time by enacting high profile, but mostly harmless heists. Disguising herself as various people, she was eventually able to gain power in influence as a master thief. Popping between dimensions, she was able to display two manifestations of Louis the XV's crown, atop a handsome sheep in Aix-en-Provence, produce a missing portion of Rembrandt's the Nightwatch, and preformed several other extremely obnoxious and surreal acts. She was eventually dubbed as in the news as 'The Witch Thief', and made many accomplices and friends, who became known as 'The Bad Wings'. Eventually Paradigm found her, and convinced her that maybe abusing cross gates for absurd crimes wasn't the best idea and she might want to consider working for them.

 • Jissen Kenbu: (Actual-Battle Sword-Dance) Combo attack using "Ryusui no Ugoki" to flow around the enemy, confusing them with a constant change in speed. Matsumi will then strike from various points, slashing them with her kodachi, then ending it with "Kaiten Kenbu".
 • Kaiten Kenbu Rokuren: ("Spinning-Heavenly Sword-Dance Six-Series" or "The Dance Of The Wheeling Sword Six Successions") This attack is Aoshi's ougi. The attack involves Matsumi gripping her kodachi backhand, then slashing the opponent six times in rapid succession, an upgrade from Kaiten Kenbu made possible by the use of two kodachi, from both sides. In the anime, Shishio claims that the move relies on confusing the opponent.
 • Onmyo Hasshi: (Dusk to Dawn Strike) Matsumi throws both kodachi at the opponent, hitting the end of the first one with the second one for an extra boost. The second kodachi is hidden directly behind the first, so the opponent would only see one kodachi heading for them in their line of sight.
 • Goko Juji: (Yin-Yang Cross) Aoshi crosses the two kodachi and moves them outwards in a scissor-like cut.
 • Ryusui no Ugoki: (Flowing-Water Movement) This is moving technique where Aoshi moves around silently, rapidly alternating between fast and slow movements and confusing the opponent due to the fluid motion & continuously changing speed. It can be countered by watching for the moment the user attempts to strike.
