Appearance

Nyx is tall and quite slender, her skin as sickly pale as moonlight. Her hair is black with violet undertones, iridescent as a raven's feathers in the right lighting, and is cut short, just barely grazing her jaw. Generally favors a Victorian style, often seen in a top hat and perfectly tailored purple and black pinstriped jacket, the jacket open and a dark violet corset beneath. The cuffs of all of her jackets are adorned with skull cufflinks and she tends to favor lace trim. Nearly all of her shoes are laced-up high heeled boots that must be an utter nightmare to put on, let alone walk in. Jewelry is ever-present in the forms of various rings and necklaces, and though both ears are thoroughly pierced, only one or the other ever contains earrings, never both at the same time. She wears various masquerade masks, most of them having birdlike qualities such as a curved nose, suggesting a beak, or edged in feathers. Her voice is often soft and raspy, reminiscent of matches being struck. Pale yellow eyes take in everything with an amused interest.

Personality

Nyx possesses something of a mercurial nature, though she’s quite vivacious and friendly to those she encounters. She acts larger than life and is more than happy to provide amusement for others while actively seeking it out for herself. She doesn’t seem to grasp the concept of personal space and has no problems getting touchy-feely with new acquaintances.

Despite her jovial exterior, Nyx seeks desperately to understand humans and their interactions with each other and can’t help but be jealous of the purity and depth of their emotions.

Background

The Gatekeeper, God of life and death, is served by spirits that guide the souls of the dead back to his realm, then lead the purified new souls to their bodies. They are divided into two castes, the 'Handmaidens' and the 'First Souls.' The five First Souls were meant to guide their lesser sisters in their tasks, and thus were given sparks of the sentience granted to all mortal life. Knowing that such sentience could potentially be corrupted, the Gatekeeper ensured that all further Handmaidens were crafted from the shadow between worlds alone, able to pass from realm to realm and possessing many of the same powers as the First Souls, but substantially weaker and only able to follow their purpose and directions. Under the tutelage of the First Souls, they would maintain the balance. However, some legends say that there were originally six First Souls. This First Soul committed some act that resulted in her violating the balance. However, it was a result of her intellect and judgment, not corruption or a will to power. As such, the Gatekeeper could not bring himself to destroy his creation.

Since that incident, she has been cast down, cursed to wander the mortal realm in search of the undeniable link between the work of the gods and the free will of mortals; the ultimate proof of balance. She is cursed to never again take or create a life, to be nothing more than an observer and guide to lost souls, until she has redeemed herself in the eyes of the Gatekeeper.

Special Abilities

(These are skills, things that can be learned or trained, like martial arts techniques, Jutsu or magic spells. Abilities that are outside the norm of regular humans, but only because they have not had access to them.)

Powers & Merits

(Unique, or hereditary, in-born powers, whether due to genetics or magic, things that can't be taught to others or simply gifted to this person from an outside force. Powers based on weapons should go in the Items. Merits can also go here.)

Basic Telepathy – Nyx can read the surface thoughts of those around her but is unable to mentally communicate with them.

Basic Telekinesis – Nyx is able to move medium-sized objects with her mind and levitate herself a few inches off of the ground, but isn’t capable of picking others up.

Illusion Magic – Nyx is capable of conjuring powerful, tangible illusions, usually used in self-defense or for her own amusement. For example, she can show her tainted First Soul form, a terrifying figure that changes depending on the target's perception and fears, though it always has matted, bloodied feathers for hair and rotting joints; tends to resemble a broken doll.

Unaging (2): For some reason, you never age. While this has its benefits, if you know people long enough, they'll start to notice you not getting any older, which may cause some suspicion. While it's unlikely you'll die of old age, this merit does not keep you from getting ill or wounded.

Medium (2): You have the ability to see and interact with ghosts. Sometimes, the Restless may seek you out for favors. Depending on the ghosts you meet, this could be a very good or very bad thing.

Prophetic Ability (4): You see and understand (or try to) signs and portents sent by the Powers That Be, either through dreams or just a peculiar insight into everyday events. Your insights and visions are usually obscure, and it may take time and interpretation to get a grasp on their full indications.

Eidetic Memory (2): Having a "photographic" memory, you can accurately recall any sight or sound with a successful Alertness roll. The higher you roll the more you remember. You also rarely forget -anything-.

Unique Items

(Madougu, magical weapons or other unique or special weapons, as well as all techniques related to them, as without it technically the character is NOT able to use these abilities.)

Oar of Charon – An enchanted scythe purely for ritual use. The scythe can be used to rip open portals into the underworld, which Nyx can use for easy travel. Living beings cannot use these portals. The scythe can also be used to parry and deflect incoming attacks.

Items Of Note

Weaknesses & Flaws

Flaws can go here. Balance is key!

Deranged (3): You have a permanent, severe mental disorder. Definitely check with the OPs, and possibly your fellow players, before taking this one.

Pacifist (5): A more extreme version of Lifesaver, you refuse to do any physical harm to anyone for any reason. Particularly this'd be tough on demons.. or.. well.. let's face it, anyone in here.

Curiosity (2): Your incredible curiosity often overrides your common sense. Resisting temptation requires a successful Wits roll, difficulty depending on the situation. A very bad flaw to take with certain evil sadistic GMs.

Otherworldly Taint (2): You have a physical peculiarity (odd hair/eye color, glowing eyes, etc.) and/or just an odd aura about you which may make you stick out. Someone who suspects you're not "normal" may make an Alertness roll, difficulty 7, to determine what you are.

Disturbing Mannerism (2): You have a habit or character trait which is peculiar, gross, or annoying. You may not even be aware of it-but boy, everyone else is. Penalties of social rolls are increased at the GM's discretion.

Sterile (1): You are incapable of reproducing. If you are in a society which expects you to have children, this is a flaw. You may, however, take this as a merit if you practice lots of sex magic or something in which being fertile may actually cause more problems for you than not.

Gluttony: Whenever possible, Nyx will eat well more than she needs to survive.
