The Makishibi-Kai is a group of Yakuza utilizing ultramodern techniques to expand their power base, and is not above alliances with outside forces.

History

The Makibishi-Kai is a new player in the world of the Yakuza, following Hotel Moscow's purge and the depredations of KIRA, a lieutenant in the Yumiguchi-gumi, Hiroyuki Makishibi, saw that the time was ripe to break out on his own and form his own clan. While originally let go by the elders of the Yumiguchi-gumi, they regretted this when his aggression and hunger for power made him a far more problematic and ambitious rival than an easily controlled minor nuisance.
When smaller groups were trying to scramble for power, Hiroyuki went on a head hunting spree, catching young and ambitious members of other gangs while their faith in the system was shaken, and talked them into throwing in with him, and together they overtook each other's overseers and Oyabun, taking out even more rivals and expanding their territory brutally and efficiently. It took a decent amount of time for other groups to tighten ranks and prevent this expansion from the Makishibi-kai, but by then the damage had been done. The group had managed to take a lot of territory and had an expansive network of inter-group alliances to back each other up.
From this, Makishibi made sure that promotions and leadership were based on a meritocracy. He rewarded smarts and efficiency over experience and brutality, and did what he could to abolish the prestation systems that he felt held back the Yakuza. This had caused a few frictions, originally, but those were quickly quenched and many younger and more equality-minded people, those destined to be bosses of their own, quickly jumped on board. After all, if only the most cutthroat and competent were on top, then the trickle down would be better for everyone.
In their later years, the Makishibi-Kai grew international alliances, something hard to conceive for old school Yakuza. They did not gain the measure of power over government than other Yakuza families had, but by delving into international crime and occasionally bringing in outsiders to deal with problems, their standing as one of the top groups in the country was assured despite this. Many of their notable members are former soldiers or mercenaries, hired for their skills and capacity for destruction and murder, as well as organizational skills.

Purpose

The Makishibi-kai's goal is expansion and renewal. They have brought in outside help, an unheard of tactic in Yakuza policies. They are expanding at a frightening rate and ousting classic Yakuza families by either forcing them to join, head hunting or simple extermination. Their goal is to modernize practices and open international relations for the 893. The true goal of their leader, however, is to take out the Yumiguchi-gumi as brutally and efficiently as possible, due to past relations between them.
