Personality

Background

Not much to say here. Raised in a Rural little town with his brother. He took more to the arts and courtly mannerisms than Tsubasa Seta. Kaoru just seemed to enjoy the fine ares more then anything else. This being said he is still quite a swordsman as Shinshi Seta would not have it any other way, 'A man must know how to wield a blade.'. Having spent time with the close family friend, Takeo Masaki learning the ways of the sword. Although there personalities differ greatly he gets along well enough with his sister. Even at a young age, Kaoru was fascinated with the stories his mother would tell of the Rokugan Winter Courts and the Emerald Magistrate of her home world. Kaoru started to gain interest in law and politics because of these stories. 'Words can cut deeper then any weapon.' he was once told by Haruka. Kaoru would take classes in debate as well and general social economics.

After the events of DG he returned to Rokugan to study under the Crane clan and was brought into the Asahina house.

Special Abilities

Prefered Weapon: Swords

  • Family Styles:
  • Kakita Iaijutsu: A must know in Haruka's family, Kaoru is well versed in this style of swordsmanship Though unlike most Kakita, Kaoru uses the reverse of his blade to strike as to not draw blood.
  • Asahina Iaijutsu: Not a formal style of Rokugan but something him Shinshi and Haruka worked on together to develop. This is a Iaijutsu that targets an enemies pressure points to cause overwhelming pain or paralyzing of the the spot struck.
  • Juraian Kenjutsu Styles: Taught to him by friend of the family, Takeo Masaki.
  • Kageya-ryu: Perhaps most artful and technically challenging of the six major schools, Kageya-ryu strongly emphasizes cleanliness of form over complex maneuvers, but earns its reputation for difficulty by its unconventional use of tempo-shifting and the extreme rigor of drilling demanded by Kageya-ryu masters. As the style requires a certain level of mastery to become practicable, it is rarely practiced outside House Kageya, but it is enjoys an excellent reputation. The fundamental principle of Kageya-ryu is to control a fight's tempo, changing abruptly between fluid and staccato patterns to confuse and incapacitate the enemy.
  • Kamiki-ryu: Another style rarely seen outside the House in which it developed, Kamiki-ryu is exceptionally cerebral but has proven itself highly effective both in duels and on the battlefield by employing a method of defensive observation, baiting, and counterstrike. Kamiki-ryu's fundamental principles are patience and observation to gain strategic control of an encounter.
  • Tennen-ryu: Famous for its finesse and glamorous displays, Tennen-ryu is the rival of Kageya-ryu in pure artistry. Advanced Tennen-ryu techniques are extremely flashy, designed to distract, confuse, fluster, and intimidate the enemy--and to put on a good show, since the honor won in a duel is amplified by displays of technical mastery and effortlessness, and an embarrassed enemy is less likely to think clearly. Although the style has its detractors who dismiss it as being more flash than substance, its practitioners have proven often enough that it is not to be underestimated. The fundamental principle of Tennen-ryu is to use grandiose techniques to mislead the enemy and disrupt his focus.

Powers & Merits

  • River of Life: This is an ability that calls forth the waters of life within the blade, allowing him to pour the water onto his or someone elses wounds to heal them while minor wounds and things like that are instantly healed. Anything more requires some time to recover and it cannot restore lost limbs.
  • Rolling Fog: Exactly what it sounds like, thought use of the sword, Kaoru can blanket a general area with fog ... not like a country mind you but he could cover a castle town with it given enough time.
  • Vanishing Mist: Another sword granted ability, It allows him to explode into a mist and move to another location, generally with in a few yards. This can let him slip through doors and cracks in walls to make it into rooms unheard. However, if his foe pays close attention he can see where he is going to reappear by following the mist. Given enough time he could transport multiple people.
  • Torrent of Water: Basically the water version of Tempest of Wind. While being able to pick up and throw things, be blasted at enemies in a steady stream and used to slam foes into things this can also act as a sort of barrier of protection.
  • River Sword: A free flowing style that relies on both the sword and Kaoru's Shugenja powers of water, this form is very flowy and dance like as streams of water twist and twirl around him, Seeming to be flowing out from the sword itself. These streams of water can act as a shield for him or lash out with his slashes in long whip like arcs.

Tactician

  • Analyze: Scrutinizes an opponent to check for elemental or otherwise glaring weaknesses. WARNING: Yelling out that a guy is weak to fire may cause drastic aggro change for your mage.
  • Crucial Advice: Three times a day this ability lets an ally (not self) make a reroll on a skill (Not physical: Athletics/Alertness/Stealth) the person using the ability is trained in.

Merits

  • Soothing Voice (2): You have an entrancing voice. When using your voice (speeches, singing, poetry), you get a +2 Bonus on Social rolls. When making casual conversation, +1 Bonus.
  • Time Sense (1): You have an inate sense of time, and can with a good deal of accuracy tell what time it is without a watch. In performing feats where timing may be essential (such as certain combat or athletic maneuvers), difficulties may be lowered or dropped.
  • Iron Will (5): You cannot be mind-controlled easily, and getting you to surrender is borderline impossible. When magical (or other) mind-control is attempted on you, both roll and you get a +3 bonus to your roll. It's possible to do it, but you'll fight it with every fiber of your being, and will not stay in thrall very long.

Concentration (1): You are very good at focusing, and suffer no penalty for distractions, stress or having to repeat yourself often.

Unique Items

  • Yawarakai-Te: Also know as Tender Hands. This sword was gifted to him when he reached the age of gempekku in Rokugan. The sword was created by Kentaro Kakita, Haruka's brother and Kaoru's Uncle. The weapon itself is a Shen Nemuranai, which is an awakened item of benevolence. The sword has an awakened Water Kami with in it. This gives it various powers of healing and control over some water. Though the sword Is almost entirely a pacifists blade as it will not leave a cut on foes, rather it will heal any the blade touches. The sword shimmers as if always wet, with beads of pure, fresh, cool, water dripping from the blade itself. The Saya is covered in vines and moss like growth, with a few flowers blooming on the scabbard. When drawn the blade gives out a prismatic like sparkle and with swung the blade leaves trails if fine mists in it's wake as if slashing through some unforeseen rain.

Drawbacks

  • This sword will never cut or slay another living being. It is a life giving sword, not taking. Now knocking someone out or bashing them into submission on the other hand...
  • This weapon as as the source of water for all of Kaoru's spells. Without it he needs another source.

Items Of Note

Sparrow Wakazashi

Weaknesses & Flaws

  • Lifesaver (3): As the more diplomatic of the two brothers he has always felt that there was never a need to kill.
  • Short (1): Seta's and Kakita's are naturally short
