Appearance

A ginger-haired youth with long hair, a lean build, bright green eyes, and extremely pale skin. He wears glasses, and tries to carry an impressive air with his cool gaze, but the freckles that dot his face give him a youthful appearance that undermines him. He wears different clothes every day, and is rarely seen wearing the same outfit.

Personality

Bartiel is a seemingly cold young man who shows very little emotion on his face and very little emotion in his voice; despite this, he's extremely passionate, willful, protective, and has a peculiar sense of humor. Though he's quiet and infreqently smiles, even when happy, he does warm up over time. He has a sense of humor, and often cracks jokes of his own style, but since he says them with a straight face it's hard to tell if he's trying to make a joke or not.

Bartiel is completely asexual and sometimes has a hard time understanding people due to the degree of it; the very concepts of sexual arousal and pleasure are foreign to him. In this way, he often relates better to children because he can understand their motivations and actions more easily.

Because Bartiel has a hard time expressing his emotions in a way that fits with other people, he frequently does art. Although he does draw and paint sometimes, he primarily enjoys crafting, making jewelry, and sewing as his forms of art.


Background

Hailing from a world much like the world we know of with the exception of most major powers having a magic community which practices in various ways, Bartiel is the biological child of a minor prince and the daughter of a duchess. When his father died at a young age, however, his mother left the magic kingdom and eventually married a doctor.

Bartiel inherited the power of magic and a love of art from his birth mother, and inherited an inquisitive and intellegent mind from his stepmother. This gave him a very different sort of perspective than most magicians from his homeland, and drove him to the development of many of his own spells, as instead of listening to the concept of 'This is how we've always done it, this is how it's done', he instead analyzed the power of magic scientifically, developing techniques for electromagnetic spells as well as imbuement and enchantment magic.

Having been raised to be balanced in body, mind, and heart, in addition to being a clever magician, he's also a practicioner of martial arts. When he was 19, his mother's past caught up with the family, and for a year he was caught up in the heat of battle. His skills, gained for the sake of knowledge or honing his body or artistic pleasure were turned towards war and he found himself enjoying the heat of battle. He learned to use his noble blood to his advantage, making enemies into friends, and acting as the second in command to a small mercinary group which was headed by his stepmother.

When the crisis ended, he found himself stressed, haunted not by his actions but by the enjoyment he gained from hurting his foes, from fighting enemies. Disturbed, he ran away from his family, leaving them no avenue to contact him. He left to run from the guilt of what he had become, and he ran to find more battles that were worth fighting for.

For the last year he's made a living as a nomad, making jewelry and clothes in exchange for money, food, and board.

Special Abilities

Bartiel is a magic-user; he uses a somantic system of magic which has vocal shortcuts, however the shortcuts can be removed at the cost of requiring more motions and time to cast a spell. Most people within the system of magic he uses primarily use hand motions however he uses foot motions.

  • Earth Magic: Earth is Bartiel's native element. Unfortunately, in the system he knows how to use magic in, Earth Magic takes a lot of mana and he has very poor reserves, so he can generally cast earth spells to do with doing in-ground searches, but anything that involves moving earth is too strenuous. Earth Magic also allows him to use powerful protective spells... in theory.
    • Underground Scan: Bartiel can analyze the earth below him for living creatures, gemstones, rocks, metal, fertile areas, and poisoned areas. A similar effect can also be used to detect the purity of stone and metal, as well as find cracks and imperfections within their surface.
    • Stone Defense: Bartiel can use a Stone Defense spell to harden his body and protect it from injury... however he is able to concentrate the effect to only portions of his body, increasing their durability even further but leaving the rest unprotected.
    • Resiliance: A modification of the Stone Defense which infuses the nature of 'durability' into the fibers of his muscles, tendons, and bones, allowing him to act to his human body's full potential with much less risk of damaging itself by going at full power; this allows him to avoid things such as breaking fingers while punching people in the face.
  • Electric Magic: Due to experimentation with how magic works, Bartiel has learned to use earth magic to create electricity and magnetism at a very low mana cost to himself; this allows him to generate electric blasts and magnetic fields as well as magnetize objects; he's also able to magnetize his own body. Electrical magic can only properly be used when Bartiel is touching the ground, or the floor of something that connects to the ground.
    • Magnetize: Bartiel can magnetize things. This effect is rather powerful, and can allow him to magnetize things which normally aren't magnetic, such as wood, but the effect has the potency of slightly higher than a fridge magnet. Small metal objects can be accelerated to the point where they hurt far less than a real bullet, but they can pack quite a punch. Finally, his own body can be magnetized far more effeciently than even a pure lump of iron due to his affinity with earth magic; this can be used to allow him to leap great heights and accelerate himself through the air.
    • Volt: The basis of Bartiel's attack magic is lightning bolts. These bolts have somewhat more punch than a taser, although the contact usually lasts more than a split second.
    • Volt Wreath: With a spell to manipulate electrostatic charges that come within a few inches of his body, Bartiel's entire body can give a charge which far surpasses that of a taser, and is lethal in extended exposure.
  • Imbuement: Bartiel's true specialty is infusing things with magical power; he's able to create extremely powerful and versitile items. However in this case it's very much an art as opposed to a science, and even he doesn't have completely control of every effect the things he makes can do; he can simply set out to create, say, a 'protective charm' and wind up making a necklace that shields the body from poisons, or perhaps shields it from the common cold.
    • Craft Magical Item: Bartiel can craft magical jewelry, sew magical clothes, and infuse magic into weapons as they're being handmade; primarily defensive and protective charms, but he can also provide a variety of other effects. When crafting magic items, he works on gut and instinct and can try to make something to have a general effect, but even he doesn't know exactly what something does until it's made. Also, he has to be involved in the creation process but doesn't nessessarily need to be the sole creator; teaming up with a swordsmith or gunsmith would allow him to weave enchantments into the weapon, but he can't just slap +5 Dancing Flames on a bastard sword and call it good. Powers & Merits

  • Common Sense: Bartiel's calm demeanor lets him keep his head on his shoulders.
  • Concentration: Most people using the magic system Bartiel uses use their hands. He uses his feet and casts in the heat of melee. This requires a lot of concentration.
  • Well Traveled: After leaving home, he began travelling; since then he's become rather knowledgeble about various countries and somewhat knowledgeble about the types of magic practiced in them - even if he can't use it himself.
  • Reputation: Bartiel has gained a reputation and political allies within the UK's magical community.
  • Animal Magnetism: AUGH NO GODS GO AWAY I DON'T WANNA BANG YOU
  • Graceful: He dances and does martial arts. Guy's got grace.

Unique and Magic Items

A green longcoat. It has been enchanted to be fireproof, nigh-unbreakable, self-cleaning, self-repairing, and return to his possession if it's ever stolen. He really, really likes his coat.

A silver ring with tourmaline gemstones; this ring is enchanted to slow the wearer's metabolism.

Weaknesses & Flaws

  • Sadist: Though he is ashamed of it, Bartiel is unquestionably sadistic; this causes him all sorts of guilt.
  • Dark Secret: Bartiel is deeply ashamed of his sadistic streak and desperately tries to keep it hidden.
  • Bad Sight: Bartiel needs glasses to see more than half a meter in front of his face.
  • Group Enmity (2 point level): Bartiel has earned a degree of enmity within the UK's magical community, causing a lot of the 'old money' type nobles to loathe him for damaging their powerbase. Given, however, that he also has enough connections that won't actively move to support him but will punish anyone who openly attempts to assassinate him, they act against him in more subtle ways. Most of the time.

Though Bartiel restrains himself from actively putting himself in a situation where he can hurt people, if he's fighting someone clearly weaker than him and his allies aren't around, he tends to become very cruel and play with them like a cat batting a wounded mouse around, losing track of time if there isn't some big need to hurry along with his business.

Bartiel is an incredibly fast somantic/vocal spellcaster who can use his hands or feet. As long as he's aware, he can more or less cast spells faster than speaking a few words, but if he's unable to speak he casts spells far more slowly; if both his hands and feet are bound then he's incapable of using any magic that isn't already active.
