Appearance

Kya wears her brunette hair up in an up-side down ponytail, clipped at the bottom and guided up a little bit, allowing gravity to pull the rest back down some. She was raised to wear skirts and blouses, so she prefers to wear a similar outfit when making an impression, but she vastly prefers wearing tight pants and a tunic whenever possible. Does not care for accessories.

Personality

Although she can be moody, and sometimes pretty stubborn, Kya is a sweet girl who won't refuse to help anyone. Sometimes, though, she does get suspicious of new people/situations.

Background

Kya's mother hails directly from the Northern Water Tribe, and her father is a second generation Water Bender who was working in Republic City when she moved down into it to get a better life for herself. They met and got married, and due to their special skills, began a family clinic, utilizing both water bending and medicinal remedies for healing ailments. Kya's mother was always ambitious, and was always trying to get better and better clientele so they could, at least, have the prestigious honor of serving famous families.

Eventually, Kya was born, and began showing her water bending talents at the early age of 2. Once it was discovered, her parents taught her water-bending alongside other motor skills as she grew. Though they focused primarily on the healing aspect, other basics of water manipulation and how to defend herself in a fight (and fight back) was taught to her as well. As she grew older, she would even help out with her parents' practice, doing minor healing procedures as her parents would focus on more pressing injuries that required their utmost attention- it helped streamline the processes greatly and helped her with her healing practices and knowledge.

However, her mother also intended Kya to always make a good impression on all clients, just in case, so she always made sure Kya had good manners in front of clients and guests, and always wore ladylike clothing of skirts and blouses- even when handling bloody patients!

When Kya was around 10, a new, wealthy family moved into the neighborhood. The Shen family from Ba Sing Se. Wanting to make a good impression on them, and hopefully to at least garner them as clients, Kya's mother introduced her to their son, Long, with the instruction to do whatever it took to make him like her so that their families may become- and remain- close. At first, the two were wary of each other, but over time they grew relaxed and realized they had a lot more in common than they thought.

Her mother's plan worked, the duo became close, and so did the families. Whether or not there was talk of a betrothal, Kya would never know, but two did experiment with romance for a brief while in their early teens. However, things did not work out, and they remained friends... Except, since then, Kya's become increasingly protective of Long, always treating any new friends- especially female- with jealousy and mistrust.

When Long revealed to Kya that he was the next Avatar, her initial reaction was doubt, but she quickly warmed up to the idea, and pledged to him that he could count on her whenever he needed to.

Now that Long's on his way to PARADIGM to learn other ways to manipulate his bending abilities, Kya is joining him- protecting him, and possibly picking up on a few new skills of her own while in foreign lands.

Special Abilities

(These are skills, things that can be learned or trained, like martial arts techniques, Jutsu or magic spells. Abilities that are outside the norm of regular humans, but only because they have not had access to them.)
None at this time.

Powers & Merits

(Unique, or hereditary, in-born powers, whether due to genetics or magic, things that can't be taught to others or simply gifted to this person from an outside force. Powers based on weapons should go in the Items. Merits can also go here.)

Water Bending

  • Northern Style (with a dash of Southern)

Kya focuses mainly on defensive waterbending moves. She does also have a few offensive moves, as well, for what's a good defense if you can't push them back, either? Her movements incorporate a mix of the traditional flowing style and more modern quick-jab styles to her bending. She is terrible at using her feet for water bending, so primarily uses her upper body for it. She can also bend snow and ice, and water into ice.
Her bending becomes stronger the fuller the moon becomes, and weakens the less the moon there is.. completely becoming negated when there is no moon present (such as a lunar eclipse.) On nights of the New Moon, she can still bend, but it would be very weak.

  • Healer

Kya was taught from a very young age how to heal with her waterbending, and so she learned all of the basics, and then some, of waterbending healing.
Because she was using her bending in practice from an early age on patients who were sick, she also learned..

  • Bloodbending

A taboo art. At the time she discovered it, she didn't know better... she had just discovered that she knew where the bloodlines in people's bodies lay, and with her traditional water bending, she could tell tainted (poisoned) blood from pure blood, and figured a way to manipulate the tainted blood to the proper filters in the human body- forcing a quick excretion process. She is self-limited on this, though, due to its taboo nature. Although she does have the ability to perform her medicinal bloodbending at any point, she does not have the confidence to actually attempt it and practice it regularly, and so, if she ever does it at all, it is relegated to nights of the full moon.
Although undiscovered, yes, she could also use her blood-bending to control opponents. If she ever decides to break the taboo, due to the large amount of control she would have to exert over the person's body, this must be done on a full moon.

Cannot Plantbend at this time

Merits

  • Loyalty - Long Shen (1): You are devoted to a person, group, or cause, and easily resist attempts to persuade you away from the object of your loyalty. Any attempts to make you betray this person/cause/whatever is done with an opposed roll where you get a +2 bonus. Again, like the code of honor, you must always be loyal to this person or risk losing this benefit.
  • Concentration (1): You are very good at focusing, and suffer no penalty for distractions, stress or having to repeat yourself often.
  • Common Sense (1): You are full of practical wisdom. A great merit for starting characters, as you may receive advice from the GM regarding how to handle certain situations.
  • Graceful (2): You are extremely agile and delicate in your movements. +1 Bonus on all Athletics rolls.
  • Good Old Boy/Girl (2): You're just a nice person, and people recognize and appreciate that. +1 Bonus on social rolls when interacting with your fellow folk.

Unique Items

(Madougu, magical weapons or other unique or special weapons, as well as all techniques related to them, as without it technically the character is NOT able to use these abilities.)
None at this point

Items Of Note

She has a large water flask that she carries around with her, which contains water she can use to bend with. It's an heirloom item from her gramma.

Weaknesses & Flaws

Flaws can go here. Balance is key!

Kya's just a regular human girl. She hasn't spent a lot of time outdoors or fighting bad-guys, so her experiences- when compared to others'- are lackluster.

Kya's waterbending has two major weaknesses:

  • Moon Phase: Her bending is stronger the more apparent the moon is. However, when there is a lunar eclipse, or she is on a planet that lacks a moon, her water bending becomes nullified.
  • Binding: Kya never learned to bend with her feet, so if her arms/hands become bound, she is unable to bend at all.

Flaws

  • Allergic - Bananas (1): You suffer from an allergy to some substance; a 1 pt. version inconveniences you and may increase difficulties in certain situations.
  • Dark Secret - Blood Bending (1): There's something about you which you don't want people to know, and it would be very bad if they did (or at least you think it would be).
  • Lifesaver (3): You revere all life and will not risk killing someone at all costs. Unfortunately, as a mercenary, this can sometimes be a problem.
  • Soft-hearted (1): You can't stand to witness suffering, and if you do, all your rolls are at -2 penalty for the next hour.
