Appearance

Jay has a lean-cut physique, with pale skin. He is usually sporting a pair of magenta-rimmed wayfarers and a form-fitting racing jacket that is a dark purple (nearly black) color with large white angular stripes printed across it. His right forearm is usually wrapped with an off-white bandage that covers his phone implants.

Personality

Sarcastic and carefree, J has had a lot of time to reflect. Anything's better than getting stuck on the Highway again, though he still gets a thrill from a good drive. He appreciates other people's company and does his best to entertain a conversation.

Background

DRIVE OR DIE - INTERSTELLAR HIGHWAY 1981

No one on the '81 knows where it came from - or even how they got there. You don't get much time
to think about it, anyway. You just gotta drive.

The road seems to extend forever in some causal loop. If you look behind you for too long, you
start to lose your sense of self.

Not that I had any to begin with. This is the first thing I remember anymore: my foot on the gas,
my hand on the shift and the wheel, keeping steady on the road ahead. There's a slight bend in the
road every once in a while, but I haven't figured out if there's any pattern to it.

...

It took me a long while to figure it out.

I know it sounds crazy, but it's the only damn thing that makes sense. We're right on the edge.
The rides here don't run out of juice. You can stop to stretch your legs every so often at this
rest stop I keep hitting. I'm not sure if it's the same one, it just -feels- that way, you dig?

...

Met a couple of other drivers out here, but they've all ended up passing over the edge behind me.
Same story with them, though: no memory of their past life. All they can remember is the road.

My eyes don't feel like mine anymore. Last time I took a break I found a breakout board in the
glove box. Some words just flashed over the top of it, told me to hook up. I had no idea what it
meant, till I found those jacks in my arm and a TRS.

Once my head stopped hurting I realized it had loaded a bunch of docs. I remembered shit I hadn't
before.

I let off the gas, hit the wheel hard and pulled up on the E-brake. Maybe I was just nervous, but
the force on my body felt a lot stronger than it should have for that turn. The tail end of my
ride swung around. I felt a pop in one of my legs, like the bone was creaking, just about ready
to break.

It was just as dark in front of me as it was the other way around.

Time to see where it takes me.

Drivers on Interstellar Highway 1981 have been pulled there from other realities by an unknown force. The '81 is a road stretching just beyond the event horizon of a black hole. Each vehicle is equipped with power generators that harness the power of the gravity well in order to provide perpetual energy.

The true origins of the Highway are unknown, but the documentation provided via mindload tape indicate that it was designed as some sort of training program for pilots to learn to handle vehicles in near-light speeds.

PARADIGM's analysis of Jay's body has revealed that while he does appear to be human, much of his body has been replaced with a synthetic version of unknown origin. The recovery process provided by his standby life-support augments keep the organic material in his systems from deteriorating, as well as provide continual power for the rest of his body.

Jay's eyes are the only synthetic piece that don't try to emulate the human body in some way. They are dark metal cylinders that protrude from his eyesockets about half an inch away from his face. The lenses are filled with waves of colors that fluctuate based on the overall stress being placed on his systems. They allow him to sense electromagnetic radiation in frequencies far beyond that of humans. This aided him in navigating the stretches of the Highway by allowing him to perceive even minute changes in gravity in order to avoid disaster.

Much of his bone structure is reinforced by a network of rigid metal rods and plates that generate a field that helps the skeleton to retain its shape while being exposed to massive shifts in force. His muscle fibers are interwoven similarly, in a strange mix of organic and synthetic materials.

A four by five array of phone jacks is embedded in the right forearm, angled towards the hand at about sixty degrees. These can be plugged into various systems throughout the vehicle via cables that look similar to quarter inch TRS cables. This allows the life support systems to take advantage of the gravity drive to keep the user alive, as well as supplanting the sensors on the user's body with those of the vehicle.

J's vehicle strongly resembles a 1987 Ferrari 412: http://i.imgur.com/VQQvySv.jpg There is room for two in the cockpit. The gravity drive and other subsystems take up most of the back seat and trunk of the car. All of the circuitry looks similar to dated tech on Earth, heavily dependant on cables that resemble phone jacks for adjusting data routes, and arrays of cards like to those you would expect to see on a personal computer or server.

On the bottom of the rear windshield, the following is printed in large letters in a Roman font:

JOHN CARPENTER IX

J has no idea what the significance of the name is, or if it even explains his origin - other than it was already printed on the vehicle when he first woke up in it. He's even unsure of his own name - Jay is the one that he remembers.

As documented by the on-board systems, long exposure to the life support system has made his body dependent upon its effects. The life support system is portable, and charged by a mini-casette deck that interfaces with one of the jacks in his arm. Since the gravity drive can no longer provide perpetual energy, shutdown routines in the final moments of the vehicle's life are used to generate a few years' worth of tapes. PARADIGM is analyzing some of the casettes to determine if the technology can somehow be duplicated.

Based on his own estimations, Jay would tell you he was driving on the Highway for 'literally forever'. PARADIGM has made an approximation based on his vehicle's systems (and adjusting for relativity) that he had been piloting the machine for almost eight decades when he was recovered. It is believed that the civilization who created the technology was destroyed when the Highway was constructed.

PARADIGM has recorded no other survivors of Interstellar Highway 1981.

Skills

(These include all learned skills, as well as a relative rating from Abysmal to Amazing. The character's level of mastery in something that can be taught or at least rated by other people follows the scale: Abysmal, Novice, Good, Very Good, Incredible, Amazing)

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PUT A RANK FOR -EVERY- SKILL. Just fill out the stuff you think your character would have! Feel free to add other skills that you think your character should be noted for. (Ex: Speaking French)

Physical Skills:

  • Alertness (How alert you are.) - Very Good - J's implants provide him extra-sensory (in the literal sense) perception. He is equipped to notice slight fluctuations in electromagnetics, and can adapt sensors for other measurements as well
  • Athletics (Jumping, Climbing, Flexibility.. you know.) - Novice
  • Stealth (Sneaking! Breaking in, etc etc.) - Novice

Social Skills:

  • Subterfuge (Manipulation, Lying..) - Good - It is difficult to read Jay's true intentions. His eye implants can give him a menacing look when he wants to use it.
  • Streetwise (How well you know the hood, man.)
  • Intimidation (though I guess if you can punch a car over this can be physical..)
  • Leadership (Stepping it up for a group.)
  • Expression
  • Etiquette
  • Performance

Mental Skills:

  • Computers - Very Good
  • Science - Very Good - Within the realm of physics, particularly astrophysics.
  • Technology - Very Good - specifically electrical and mechanical. The tech used on his ship looks like dated technology, but it is actually highly advanced. His knowledge of fundamentals with regards to electricity and motion make it easy for him to navigate these concepts in modern electronics and machinery.

Other Skills:

  • Driving - Amazing - Jay's training has made him a natural at manuevering in speeds far exceeding that of anything humans have seen in modern times. He is capable of making quick judgement calls when it counts.
  • Empathy (some people have more than others)
  • Animal Ken - Abysmal - Jay has no reference point for interaction with animals.

Special Abilities

  • Self-Repairing Subsystems - Jay's systems maintain themselves and will attempt to heal both synthetic and organic damage. Depending on the scale of damage, he can regrow organic tissue over the course of a week. Synthetic damage can require harvesting materials (carbon, steel, etc) but most minor issues can be fixed within a couple of days.
  • Hot Wires - Jay attempts to interface with foreign tech with a cable of his own design. One end plugs into a slot on his wrist, the other has five exposed wires that he'll use to connect directly to wires/electrical pads/etc to attempt reading low level information or to take control (example: hotwire a car, bypass electronic lock, alarm)
  • Human Battery - Allows him to power low-power devices with his internal systems. Devices with too much current draw risk damage to his organic parts.
  • Electromagnetic Sensors - Because of how Jay perceives the world, he is not affected by low or no light conditions when it comes to maneuvering. He can sense the presence of others within about 10m of himself in any direction (provided there are no obstructions). With his eyes in focus, he can see much further than that in the same conditions.

Unique Items

  • Optical Implants - Black cylinders that are grafted to his skull through his eyesockets.
  • Skeletal Reinforcement - A nanoweave of strong alloy is wrapped around every bone in his body. Most joints have been replaced with ones made out of the same substance.
  • Augmented Muscle Fiber - His lean-cut physique doesn't exactly depict the idea of strength, but his muscles are interwoven with synthetic muscle fibers to provide a boost to his strength. These (along with the skeletal reinforcements) are designed to help keep his body in one piece in high-G environments.
  • Portable Life Support System - A small device that resembles a portable mini-cassette player. It plugs directly into one of the jacks on Jay's right arm and fits into a slot in his arm that he conceals most of the time with a bandage. It provides power to his synthetic systems and performs medical maintenance on his organic tissues when necessary (healing skin wounds, protecting organic muscle tissue, protecting the heart and brain, etc.)
  • Interface Deck - A four by five array of phone jacks embedded in Jay's forearm. The cables he uses look like standard quarter-inch TRS cables at first glance, but close inspection of the plug would show hundreds of distinct connections are made at once with a single cable. These were used to interface with the JOHN CARPENTER IX's systems, but as the ship is now dormant he has been experimenting with crafting cables that can adapt this interface to communicate with 'simple' Earth tech.
  • Vocal Modulator/Translator - When Jay landed, his vocal modulator was calibrated to Japanese before the ship was powered off. Through it, his voice sounds natural, and even seems to integrate the nuances of the language. While it would be possible to calibrate this device to other languages supported by the ship's systems, the ship has been dormant since Jay's arrival.

Items Of Note

Weaknesses & Flaws

Jay must swap out the tapes in his portable life-support every couple of days. He keeps the deck on his arm concealed with bandages when he is not using it to interface with some kind of system. Neglecting to power the life-support will cause his synthetic organs to power off and his body will start to shut down.

Since many of his components are electrical, he is susceptible to EMP attacks. While such attacks would not necessarily kill him, it would prevent him from being able to communicate and would severely impair his ability to move.

As his body is designed with the purpose of withstanding extreme G-forces, his body's strength is not easily harnessed in other ways. While it may be possible for him to lift extremly heavy objects, doing so could cause damage to some of his systems. The feats of strength he is capable of displaying without damage are about on par with that of a well-trained human.

NPC(s) to go with char

JOHN CARPENTER IX - Jay's ship showed signs of intelligence before being powered off. It will lie dormant in PARADIGM's custody until a method for providing sufficient power to its systems can be discovered.
