Personality

While Shin has mellowed out as he became a Jounin, he is a judgemental, sarcastic prick at the core. He doesn't hold his tongue, and only shows tact when he has to, otherwise, he says what he feels. He is loyal to a fault to Konoha and his comrades, however, and takes his responsibilities as a ninja, and a team leader, very seriously.

Background

For some unfathomable reason, at one point in his life, Sai decided to get married. No one knows why, Naruto suspects he saw that's what people in books did.

However, his wife got fat, so he divorced her, then he married a younger, cuter wife, who didn't get fat, at least until she got pregnant, which by this time, was completely normal, as he'd been reading about pregnancy in a book. So then it was okay.

Nine months later, Shin was born, a healthy baby boy, without actual complications. About a year later his training began. As both his parents were members of ROOT, there wasn't actually any time for them to waste on training another prodigy. The training was simple and not very intense at first, as there's.. very little you can make a baby do past it's basic motor skills, but little by little it started to grow.

This set the pace for the rest of his life. Raised to be a loyal member of Konoha above all else, Shin was trained in the ways of combat and art by his father, and the skills of history, research and tactics by his mother. It didn't take long before the boy was ready for the academy.. or being a Genin. Being a child prodigy made him a standout student at the academy, easily surpassing all other students in his class, and standing to the forefront of everything.. well. Right after Uchiha Irumi. He was assigned to a team, and very shortly after that passed on to Chuunin, scoring exceptionally well in the exam.

At this point, no one was really surprised. Shin was after all born from the fourth member of Team 7, who had been a prodigy himself, and currently one of the ANBU leaders of Konoha. What did surprise a lot of people who became aware of it was that Shin had attempted the ANBU exam, even at the cost of losing his position on a team.. and failed. That he failed wasn't the big surprise, it was that he made it all the way to the end and didn't make it despite that. He returned to active duty a few months later, after recuperating from the grueling exams, and slowly faded out into the background after that.

The truth of the matter is, Shin outdid everyone at that ANBU exam. He scored exceptionally well at everything. In fact, while he wasn't the best at anything, he was second best at -everything-, and he was a shoe-in to participate. But his examiner interviewed him and had him disqualified on grounds that he lacked the personality to do so. What Shin has kept secret to this day, is that his examiner was also a member of ROOT, who had been assigned by Sai to monitor Shin's progress. When Shin turned out to be all that he could be.. and more.. he was told about ROOT, it's goals and it's purposes, and offered to join. Shin, of course, accepted, as that's what he'd been raised for his whole life. The price to pay was to appear to fail the exam and lose his meteoric rise to the top. So he of course, accepted.

Being a member of ROOT meant he had special duties now, and he was relocated to observe relatives of village members who lived outside the actual walls of Konoha. This was of course, an excuse, as he was off being trained as an ANBU, to keep an eye and track on potential traitors.

He was taught the techniques he'd need for hunting and disposing of other shinobi, and further expanded on his own skills. As such, he was kept quite away from people for most of his life away from people, in the middle of training. Even his time on a team (which was barely enough to get the number of D and C rank missions to be allowed to pass the Chuunin exam) was practically trained out of his mind, to make more room for hunting and combat techniques.

Bikou Ninjutsu - Shadowing Stealth Technique
Bikou Ninjutsu is the technique ninjas use to follow their targets covertly. The manner in which the ninja shadows their target can differ, from the basic hiding under a nearby object, to using a jutsu to turn oneself invisible.
Bunshin no Jutsu - Clone Technique
This technique must be mastered by any ninja who has graduated from the Academy at the Hidden Leaf Village. It's the most basic technique a Genin must know, since it can be a real lifesaver. This ninjutsu creates a shadow clone of the caster.
Henge no Jutsu - Transformation Technique
Henge no Jutsu is the basic skill a ninja must know to become a Genin. It is a very useful and widely used skill in the series, as it has many uses. It's mostly used as a decoy, to confuse the opponent by transforming into somebody that's an ally with the enemy.
Kawarimi no Jutsu - Body Replacement Technique
The Body Substitute skill is a widely used and very famous skill among shinobis. Put simply, the user uses speed to his/her advantage, and grabs an item from the environment and places it on his/her current position while moving out of' the way.
Kakuremino no Jutsu - Cloak of Invisibility Technique

Ayatsuito no Jutsu - String Reeling Technique
Ayatsuito no Jutsu is a Ninjutsu technique utilizing wire. This string can be used in rappeling, or as a method to tie down and restrict the movement of an opponent. The Uchiha clan also utilizes the wire in their Sharingan Soufuusha Sannotachi technique. The wire allows the clan member to pin down an opponent, and then unleash a torrent of fire upon them.
Kirigakure no Jutsu - Hidden Mist Technique

A Ninjutsu technique that covers the area surrounding the ninja using it completely in mist. Perfect for silent killing, since there's practically no visibility within the area of this jutsu.
Genjutsu Kai (幻術解) - Genjutsu Dissipation

A Ninjutsu technique where the ninja focuses their chakra and screams "kai" or "release." They can perform it on themselves or on others. It will effectively ward off most Genjutsu, unless extremely powerful or when used in conjunction with an advanced bloodline.

Kanashibari no Jutsu - Paralyzing Stare
A Ninjutsu technique where the ninja stares down their opponent, causing them to become completely frozen in their tracks. Perfect for escaping a dire situation, or for stalling a target in an assassination.

Sumi Bunshin no Jutsu - Ink Clone Technique

A technique that infuses chakra into ink to form clones of the user. If struck, the ink clones revert back to plain ink.

By directly pouring out his ink instead of using it to draw, Sai can create a large amount of creatures such as a nest of snakes to attack the target.

Sumi Fueru No Jutsu - Ink Increase Jutsu

This Jutsu allows Shin to drop ink in shadow, increase the darkness around him, then hide in it, without needing to use a jutsu. This is MOSTLY useful for hiding with someone else, or an item from sight.

Sumigasumi no Jutsu - Ink Mist Technique

The user wraps their body in chakra-infused ink to hide themselves creating an effective smokescreen. When used in combination with the Body Flicker Technique, the user can quickly leave the battlefield without being noticed.

Sumi Shokushu no Jutsu - Ink Tentacle Technique

Shin pours ink on the ground, then activates it with a handseal and chakra. This causes ink black tentacles to form from the ground, each with a strength equivalent to a full grown man. Naturally, the tentacles are vulnerable to solvent or fire. Each quart of ink spilled requires extra chakra though only one set of handseals need to be performed. One quart can summon 4 tentacles. Shin's current record is 60 tentacles, at full chakra.

Choujuu Giga - Super Beast Imitation Drawing

Using chakra-infused ink, the user can quickly and expertly draw objects onto their scroll. The moment the brush is removed from the scroll, the images leap from the paper, grow to life-size, and act according to the user's will. Because they are made of ink, a single blow is usually enough to dispel them. For discreet communiques while undercover, Sai is able to turn the words he writes into small animals, allowing them to travel unnoticed to the intended target, after which the ink animal requires a scroll to revert back into written information. In addition to the animals it is normally used to create, Shin can produce explosive tags.

Choushin Giga - Super God Imitating Drawing

The Super God Imitating Drawing is a technique usable by those who have mastered the Super Beast Imitating Drawing. Often employed in one-to-one combat, the user is able to bring forth massive and powerful gods. Boasting greater power than the Super Beast Imitating Drawing, each creation can quickly deliver deadly blows capable of easily destroying stone and the terrain. Because these drawings draw on the emotions of the user, the angrier they become, the more powerful the drawings become.
Against Magire, Sai was able to strip the former of his chakra cloak and knock him unconscious with a single blow. Likewise, he was able to overpower and even throw the Gatekeeper a considerable distance.

Chitai Ansatsu no Jutsu - Delayed Assassination Technique
Rank: B-Rank This Jutsu needs to be prepared in advance. After a series of handseals, Shin can dip his novelty throwing or stabbing weapons (quills, chinese ink pens, what have you) in the ink, creating a solid tip. This tip stays 'stuck' to the weapon, until Shin connects with his target. This target will then feel the pain of the attack, and possibly remove the weapon, now or later. The power of this Jutsu (which Shin needs to activate with a word on contact) will send the ink tip into the blood stream, eventually making it's way to the heart, within 1 to 10 days. Once there, the solid ink will explode, causing the heart to burst. The ink will then disolve among the blood and fluids there, leaving little to no trace of the cause of death (save heart failure jokes).

The user forms projectiles underwater; the water that the projectiles are made of is highly pressurised because of how compact they are. The projectiles are then shot from the water at high speeds at the user's target, which can be made more lethal by adding a spinning motion. This technique is especially useful during fights taking place on top of water, as the projectiles can be shot at the target from any direction, ideally blind-spots. Users will often try to distract targets before using this technique against them, or even use this technique itself as a distraction.[1] In the anime, multiple users can work together to create larger, stronger projectiles,[2] or a single user can create several smaller projectiles in a scattershot manner.

The members of ROOT often use this technique as a means to meet with multiple members at once, compensating for the fact that a group may not always be in close proximity. All the images projected by this technique appear corporeal and even the immediate surroundings can be altered by the user.
Projecting themselves also gives the user awareness of the chosen location, allowing the user to monitor the surrounding area. Though the user's movement is sometimes seen reflected in their projection, this does not seem to be necessary in all uses.

Black and White (1): You see all situations in black and white, good and evil, etc. In situations where this limited, judgmental way of thinking may hinder your reaction to something or cause you to act socially inappropriate, your Social rolls are at -1 Penalty.
Compulsive Speech (aka Big Mouth) (1): For whatever reason, you have difficulty sticking to the rule, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say it at all." 1 point makes you talkative and a bit blunt; 2 points makes you a complete prick.
